'Self Portrait with Two Figures' (2022)

Acrylic paint on cartridge paper

33.1" x 23.4"

The central figure is abject, carried by two peripheral figures, who seem amused. Is this comic though, and why should abjection arouse amusement? There could be a more sombre theme, because the “Deposition of Jesus from the Cross” is vaguely referenced, both in the positioning of the figures and the nakedness of the central figure, who doesn't seem especially sad, more like he is passive or ill. Although the central figure has no strength or power, neither do his two assistants, one of whom is dead and the other seems like a puppet (perhaps controlled through the curtain?) So who controls whom? Where does the power lie? We think we are in charge of our own fate, but is this just an illusion?

Please be advised, a tray frame would add about an inch to the size of the canvas.
