Horse and Riders (2023)

Acrylic on Canvas

39" x 39" / 100cm x 100cm

The female rider watches as the horse with a male human face jumps the barrier. Is this a depiction of a sexual relationship (dominatrix and her submissive slave) or a parental relationship (dominant mother and squashed son)? The power contrast is obvious in the binaries rider - ridden, controller-controlled and the triumphant female's expression compared with the timid, fearful horse's expression.

Part of the sexual potency of the picture is in the muscled horseflesh and the sense of movement. That the movement is directed around the curved racetrack shows how the muscular horse - male is controlled and tamed, how the sexual energy is channelled and, despite the humiliation of control, maintains forceful momentum.

Please be advised, a tray frame would add about an inch to the size of the canvas.
